Getting from A to B: A guide to public transportation in Denmark

image

When in another country it can be difficult to get from A to B, if you don’t know how the public transport works, and therefore I have written the following guide.

Rejseplanen

The first step when travelling with public transportation is, of course, to know how you can get there. To help with this, there is an app and website called: “Rejseplanen”, which means: “The travelling plan” in English. Here, you can e.g. enter your current location and your end destination, and the app will provide you with means of transportation, you can use.

When you use the website, the front page looks like this:

It is both possible to find trains and buses in Rejseplanen.

Beneath are examples of how it looks, when it shows options for means of transport:

You can find the website for Rejseplanen HERE.

When you have found the way in which you want to get from A to B, it is, of course, necessary to have a valid ticket. There are some different options for buying a ticket, which I will now explain further:

Rejsekort

The first one is called Rejsekort (“Travel card” in English”), and this is a card you can use for most of the public transport in Denmark. You can buy a Rejsekort here.

It currently costs 50 DKK. to buy this card, and you will be charged an amount for every time you use the card. Depending on how much you travel, you can get some discounts – you can read more about the prices here.

Rejsekort is both available with a physical card, but it is also an option to use it on an app. The app can be downloaded here.

Use Rejsekort in a bus

When you use Rejsekort in a bus, you will have to check in inside the bus.

In some buses, you need to go into the bus from the front door, and in other buses it doesn’t matter from which door you enter the bus. When you enter the bus, there are some card readers, you can check in on – you can use these if you have the physical card. You just hold your card against it, and it will say a sound.

When you leave the bus again, you use the one, that says: “check ud” (it will have a red mark on it). If you use the app, you just swipe on your phone to check in before entering the bus, and you just swipe again after leaving the bus.

Use rejsekort in a train, tram or metro

If you travel by train, tram or metro, the system is pretty much the same as it is in a bus. The only difference is, that the card reader to check in and out is on the station and not inside the vehicle.
If you use the app, it works the same way as if you would use it on a bus.

Beneath are pictures of the card readers:
